The exotic journey to Danau Sentarum National Park
Danau Sentarum National Park area has a long history of human settlement, Up to about 200 vears ago, the area was inhabited by various ethnic groups They used to come to the lake in the dry season to fish and retum to thelir villages afterward. Most of therm come from surrounding areas like Selimbau, Suhak Semitau, Jongkong, Batang Lupar, Badau, Puring Kencana, and Embaloh Hill. Thus,the lake's water level is very Important to the villagers. Fortunately, the akese experience rainy. season most of the time of the year, which accounts for higher water level. While, July, August, and September are usuallythe driest season of the year.As time goes by, smalgroups of people decided to sette in hamlets as they exist to this day. They set up traditional ways to fish which allow every vilage to have their own fishing area. They also have smalakes that should not be fished, in order to maintain the supplies. This system has helped to maintair environment sustainability. In the end , their long settlement has made them a part of the ecosystemOn the other hand, Danau Sentarum also plays an important role in the settements along Kapuas river. Four main cties; Putussibau Sintang, Sanggau and the provincial capital Pontianak depend strongly on the lake . It is the heart of water system on the upper West Borneo. During the rainy season, the excess water is collected in the lake thus preventing flood. While in the dry season, those water is distributed to provide for people along Kapuas river. In June 15, 1980, the are round the lake was gazetted as a Nature Preserve, covering an area of 80.000 hectares Later on, in 1982 t became a Wildlife Reserve (Suaka Margasatwa, with a lesser area, about 75.000 hectares. Eventually, it was enlarged to 132,000 hectares to include extensive tracts of peat swamp forest and several hill ranges with dry lowland and heath forest. In April 1994, Danau Sentarum was declared Indonesia's second RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance, thus drawing internationa attention to this unique area. In 1999, its status was upgraded to a National Park (Taman Nasional) and includes the 132,000-hectare core area, however the authority was only established in 2006.One of the National Park main goals is to keep a sustainable ecosystem and increase the local people' welfare. This will only achlevable through a colaboratve work bebween the authorties and the loal communities. In orde to do so, building an understanding on the importance of the sustainable Mife among the locals willbe the key. Once people involve in keeping the lake sustain, it will eventually increase their welfare, as they depend their life on the lake, Thus, it il be the natural resource to support the people for man generations to come. Since t was established, the authority has made progresses for the people welifare and nature conservation.
